Viola was born to Andrew and Gertrude Morris in Pasco, Washington on December 8, 1920. She was the youngest of three girls (sisters Grace and Cora). Upon her mother's untimely death, baby Viola was adopted by an aunt and uncle and subsequently moved to North Dakota. Luella and R.A. Werner's family became her family. She had a sister Crystal and two brothers Burnett and Kermit. While a student at Valley City State Teachers' College, Vi met the love of her life, Alvin Hoffman. They married on December 9, 1943, and were eventually blessed with three children: Michael, Laurel, and Lynne. Al and Vi moved to Oregon when Al got a job teaching at Roseburg High School. Al passed away at age 85 in 2004, after 62 years of marriage. Vi worked as a substitute teacher for many years, but raising her children was her first priority. After the kids were grown, Vi worked as a secretary at UCC and at the family business, Hoffman Wholesale. She was an accomplished cook, seamstress, and gardener. She also enjoyed watercolor painting. We wish to thank Vi's caregivers Lori and Susie for helping us keep Vi comfortably at home, as per her wishes. We know Mom is in heaven with Al and her beloved daughter Laurel, who preceded her in death in 1995. Rest in peace, Mom. We love you very much. Vi is survived by her son Mike, daughter Lynne, grandchildren Eric, Brandon, Carrie, Michael, and Lily ,two great-grandchildren, and good friend Dorothy Whitbeck. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Vi's name to the First Presbyterian Church of Roseburg or to PEO - Chapter ES.
