Walter C. Heffner 88, died at home on Saturday, June 26, 2010, after a year-long struggle with cancer. He was born on November 16, 1921, in Sheffield, Iowa to parents, Nelle and Stanley Heffner. He was raised in Pomona, California, graduating from Pomona High School in 1939. Walt enlisted in World War II, serving as a glider pilot instructor in the Army Air Corps. He married his high school sweetheart, La Verne Boone, in 1942. After leaving military service they returned to Pomona, where they raised their family and owned a grocery business. In 1965, they moved to Morro Bay, California, when Walt started work at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. He worked in the computer center until his retirement in 1983. In 2007, they moved to Roseburg, Oregon, and became residents of Linus Oakes Retirement Community. He had eight grandchildren and nine (soon to be ten) great-grandchildren. Walter was preceded in death by his brother, Robert; his parents, and infant daughter, Janis Lynn. Walter will be remembered for his gentle manner, soft spoken nature, and subtle sense of humor. An avid computer user, he kept in touch with family and friends via email, blogs, etc. His constant love of learning was only heightened as he witnessed and embraced the development of computers and electronic communication during his lifetime. Wilson's Chapel of the Roses is in charge of the arrangements. There will be no service at the request of the family. Entombment will be at Roseburg Memorial Gardens. A special thanks goes to the Amedysis Hospice team that provided service, support and incredible love over the last four months.
