William Jerome "Bill" Brink
January 29, 1949 - January 31, 2015

William Jerome "Bill" Brink was born on January 29, 1949, in Montour Falls, New York to Roland "Sonny" and Helen Brink. Bill was raised in the Upstate New York areas of Millport, Montour Falls, and Elmira until age 7, when his family grew tired of the cold, snowy winters and packed him and sisters Sandra and Nancy up to move cross-country to Southern California. Bill's family lived in Oceanside and later Vista, California, where he performed with the Vista High School orchestra and marching band as an accomplished musician on numerous instruments. Partway through his junior year of high school, the family relocated once more from suburban Southern California to the North Umpqua area of Southern Oregon, where he met the love of his life Shirley.
Bill graduated from Glide High School in 1967 and joined the US Army in 1968. Bill auditioned for and was stationed with the 4th Infantry Division Army Band out of Ft. Lewis, Washington. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam with the 4th Infantry Division, where he once performed for General Westmoreland. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Bill drove school bus for the Glide School District and spent many years in the timber industry. Bill graduated from Umpqua Community College in 1987 and opened his own automotive repair business, which he operated for nearly 30 years before his retirement in 2011. Bill was known as the "Voice of the Glide Wildcats" as the PA announcer for both football and track for over 25 years.
Bill and Shirley were married on May 27, 1972 and remained in the Glide area where they raised their children Donovan and Melissa. His was the very proud grandfather of Meagan and Zachary.
Bill was preceded in death by his father, Sonny; brothers-in-law Jim Gifford, Ed Pahl and Rick Hines; aunt and uncle Shirley and Sonny Naylor; in-laws Howard and Norma Hansen; and best friend and golfing buddy Bruce Bailey.
Bill is survived by his wife Shirley; mother Helen Brink; son Donovan; daughter Melissa; grandchildren Meagan and Zach; sisters Sandy (Larry) Swift and Nancy Pahl; sisters-in-law Carol Hines and Diane (Russ Miller) Beukema; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Glide High School Booster Club in Bill's memory. Donations can be mailed to Glide Booster Club, P.O. Box 244, Glide, OR 97443.
A celebration of Bill's life will be held Saturday, March 7th at 1:00 PM at the Glide High School football/track field.
Bill may not be with us now, but we know he is with his Dad working on cars, fishing with Howard and playing golf with Bruce (while rehashing every shot on every hole on the course, as they did so often). As Bill so often said as a goodbye, "Mention my name". We will mention his name often with a lifetime of loving memories.
